UK Government Must Learn From Welsh Government on Domestic Violence

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to look at the work of devolved institutions when addressing domestic violence. The debate was held in Westminster Hall and was led by prominent women’s rights campaigner, Jess Phillips MP. Referencing the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Act (Wales), which came into force in 2015, Mr Elmore highlighted the benefits of having a joined-up service provision for victims. Mr Elmore commented: “On domestic violence, and indeed many other policy areas, the UK Government would do well to look at what the devolved administrations are doing to see The Ogmore MP went on to highlight the additional £500,000 the Welsh

The Tide is Turning for 1950s Women, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore MP has indicated that the pressure is mounting on the UK Government to correct the injustice experienced by 1950s women affected by State Pension age changes. The Ogmore MP has been a long-time advocate of seeking changes for those women who have been affected by the changes brought in under the Tory-Lib Dem Coalition Government. Mr Elmore commented: “With a hung Parliament and vast swathes of the country now falling behind this campaign, it’s time the Government started listening and addressed the very real concerns of the hundreds of thousands of women affected by this issue.” Mr Elmore recently held a meeting to discuss the campaign with over 100 of the women affected across

MP Calls Out DWP Ministers Over False Universal Credit Claims

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called out the DWP for misinforming him about the roll-out dates in his constituency for Universal Credit. During DWP questions, Mr Elmore said: “I’ve been told that in my constituency, Universal Credit will be taking place in March next year. It’s incorrect. According to the House of Commons Library, it’s in March, June and November. How can the public have any trust in what the government is doing with Universal Credit if they simply don’t know if they simply don’t know the dates of the roll-out within constituencies and in answers to MPs.” In response to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Mr Elmore, Damian Hinds MP, Minister of State for Work and Pensions,

Chris Elmore MP Congratulates Christmas Card Competition Winners

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has congratulated the winners of his annual Christmas card competition. The local MP received over 500 entries from schools across the Ogmore constituency and painstakingly whittled these down to find a winner to feature on his card this year. Mr Elmore commented: “I’m delighted by the artistic flare which has been demonstrated in the entries to my competition this year. It was so difficult to decide on the winner – there were around 50 which could have easily won!” Last week, Mr Elmore visited Pencoed Comprehensive School to present the designer of the winning entry, Joshua Simmonds, with his certificate and prize. The three runners up were: Tigerlillie Jenkins (Coleg

Local MP Joins Stem Cell Donor Register

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has joined the DKMS stem cell donor register in the hope of being a match for a person suffering with blood cancer. Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukaemia. Simply by using a straight forward swab kit, Mr Elmore was able to add his name to a register which will be cross-referenced with new patients who may be in need of treatment. Mr Elmore commented: “Only one in three people will find a donor within their own family so it’s incredibly important that there is a big list of individuals who are willing to donate their stem cells if it means it could one day save somebody’s life. I’m proud to have joined the register a

Elmore Calls For Urgent Statement Following Natwest Closures

Following Natwest’s announcement of 20 bank closures across Wales, Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has called on the UK Government to act. Mr Elmore asked the Leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom MP, to instruct a Treasury Minister to make an urgent statement regarding the closures. Mr Elmore commented: “It cannot be right that my constituents will be left with just one bank branch if the closure of Natwest in Pencoed and Maesteg goes ahead. Technology does change banking requirements, but we do still need a level of face-to-face provision.” Pencoed, the second largest town in Mr Elmore’s Ogmore constituency, will be left without any bank branches at all by next summer if plans to close Natwest go a

Local MP and AM Lend a Hand at Local Food Collection

Ogmore representatives, Chris Elmore MP and Huw Irranca-Davies AM, have thrown their support behind a nationwide food collection to help people who find themselves in need this Christmas. From Thursday, November 30 to Saturday, December 2, more than 2,600 Tesco stores across the UK took part in the annual Food Collection, which encourages shoppers to donate long-life foods to help charities FareShare and The Trussell Trust’s foodbank network to give food and support to people who might otherwise go hungry this Christmas. My District Dairy Column | December 2017

District Diary Column - December 2017 I’d first of all like to wish all residents across the constituency a very merry Christmas and I hope you have a wonderful festive break with family and friends. November was certainly a busy month both in Parliament and across the constituency. It was fantastic that so many local schools chose to mark UK Parliament Week this year by holding events to raise awareness about the functions of Parliament and how school pupils can get more involved in our democracy. As part of the week, I enjoyed visiting Pencoed Primary School to talk to pupils about my role as their local MP – they certainly gave me quite a grilling! It’s vitally important that young people

Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling MP, u-turned on the government’s commitment to fully electrify the Great Western mainline between Cardiff and Swansea in July this year. Mr Elmore commented: “Part of the proposals for full rail electrification included vital safety upgrades such as the closure of dangerous level crossings like the one in Pencoed. It is unacceptable that these essential modifications might no longer happen.” The Ogmore MP spoke out during the Transport Secretary’s statement to the House of Commons regarding future rail proposals.
