My Glamorgan Gem Column - January 2018

My Glamorgan Gem Column - Chris Elmore MP January 2018 This Saturday marks Holocaust Memorial Day 2018. Whilst the events of World War II and the Holocaust may seem like the distant past, it is imperative that we take the opportunity which Holocaust Memorial Day provides to remember the millions of people who were murdered by the Nazi regime, and subsequently in genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. We must always learn lessons from the past to ensure that such atrocities never happen again. Some may think such crimes could not occur in the present day but the biggest risk to this statement being rendered false is complacency. Across our communities, we must always endeavour to c

Local MP and AM to Hold Second Funding Advice Day

Ogmore representatives Chris Elmore MP and Huw Irranca-Davies AM are to hold a second Funding Advice Day on Friday, 16th February 2018. This event follows the similar successful event the duo held in Pencoed last year which was attended by over 100 community groups. This year’s Advice Day will be held at Llanharan Rugby Club between 10am and 12 noon. Mr Elmore commented: “We know how difficult clubs and community groups can find accessing the funding they need to get started or expand. This is a great opportunity to get one-to-one contact with 13 different funding providers who may be able to help.” Mr Irranca-Davies added: “Across Ogmore, there are so many brilliant community groups which c

Chris Elmore Highlights World's Largest Unmet Disability

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has put his support behind Clearly – a campaign seeking to bring clear vision to the 2.5 billion people who are currently denied this ability worldwide. At an event in Parliament last week, Clearly gave Mr Elmore a demonstration of the simplicity of the solution to uncorrected poor vision by inviting him to take a simple vision check using a smart phone app. The Clearly campaign has gained cross-party support, alongside key celebrity backers such as Annie Lennox, Lenny Henry, James Corden and Niall Horan. As part of this campaign, Clearly have called on Commonwealth leaders to put poor vision on the agenda at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London this

MP Receives Assurances on Vital Safety Improvements

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has received assurances from Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling MP, in relation to rail safety upgrades previously thought to have been scrapped alongside electrification. During Transport Questions, Mr Elmore asked Transport Under-Secretary, Nusrat Ghani MP, to meet with him and representatives from Pencoed Town Council to discuss the closure of Pencoed level crossing. Mr Grayling responded on Ms Ghani’s behalf and stated that decisions regarding rail electrification “do not and will not in any way impede safety and [the UK Government has] a very large amount of money over the next five years” to fund such upgrades. Mr Elmore commented: “I, and many others incl

Ogmore MP Pushes For Automatic Voter Registration

MP for Ogmore Chris Elmore has called on the UK Government to automatically add individuals to the electoral register when their National Insurance number is issued. Since 2014 electors have had to register individually, not by household as was practiced prior to this. Mr Elmore commented: “With voter turnout very low at some elections, we must do all we can to ensure people are registered to vote so that they can have their say. For me, it makes perfect sense to automatically register everybody to vote when they are first issued with a National Insurance number. This would make the system more secure, help to engage more of the public with politics and prevent voter fraud.” Last year, the U

Tories Should Stop Bashing the NHS in Wales, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to stop criticising the NHS in Wales. Mr Elmore, who was speaking in an Opposition Day debate on the NHS winter crisis, praised the integrated health and social care service overseen by the Welsh Government. The Ogmore MP commented: “It’s high time the UK Government stopped attacking the Welsh NHS and focussed on the significant issues the NHS in England is facing. The Welsh Government has previously taken the lead on integrating health and social care services: the UK Government would do well to build on the Welsh Government’s record, rather than to discredit it.” The Opposition Day motion demanding the UK Government to release ad

My Glamorgan Gazette Column - January 2018

Glamorgan Gazette Column | Chris Elmore MP January 2018 I would like to wish all Gazette readers a very happy New Year. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and I hope you all have a brilliant start to 2018. New Year is a time for evaluation and renewal for many. It’s a time where we can look forward with optimism and hope for the future. In light of this, I’d like to highlight an issue which I feel stands as a road block to prosperity across our communities in 2018. The haphazard roll-out of Universal Credit must be paused before it reaches the job centres in our area. The new benefit is throwing individuals and families across our country into a state of significant uncertainty

Elmore Slams Biggest Fares Hike in 5 Years

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has branded the highest rail fare rise for 5 years as another “kick in the teeth” for passengers. The average increase in ticket pricing across the UK is 3.4% from 1st January. Arriva Trains Wales’ fares have risen by 3.3% whilst Great Western Rail’s services will be hiked by 3.1%. Mr Elmore commented: “This is yet another blow for passengers across the country. We’ve had the planned rail electrification scrapped last summer and now we’re seeing above inflation rate rises to the cost of your journey to work or visit to town. It wouldn’t be so bad if we were getting the vital safety upgrades we need in this area such as the closure of the Pencoed level crossing.” Mr Elm
