Brexit Trade Deals Must Not Hurt Welsh Farmers, warns Ogmore MP

MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has issued a stark warning to UK Government Ministers about their post-Brexit trade deals. During International Trade questions, Mr Elmore spoke up on behalf of Welsh farmers and asked for their industry to be protected from any future global trade deals. Citing the example of New Zealand lamb, Mr Elmore said that new trade deals with New Zealand must not come with a cost to the Welsh lamb industry. Speaking after raising his question, Mr Elmore commented: “It’s all very well saying ‘we’ll get all these trade deals and everything will be fine’ but we have to think about the impact these new opportunities may have on our domestic industries. Welsh farmers can not

We Need Certainty on Immigration, says Ogmore MP

Local MP Speaks Out on Bank Closures

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has expressed his anger at the continued closure of local banks across Ogmore. Following the decision of Natwest to close its branches in Maesteg and Pencoed, Mr Elmore’s constituency now only has one bank to serve its 58,000 residents. During a recent debate in Parliament, Mr Elmore stated that the developing programme of closures of banks across the UK was a “shocking failure of the banking system”. Speaking after the debate, Mr Elmore said: “Whilst I understand that many of our banking services are available online, we can’t have a situation where all of our high street bank branches close. There are many people without good access – or indeed any access – to

My Glamorgan Gem Column - February 2018

Glamorgan Gem Column - February 2018 Last week marked 100 years since Parliament passed a law which gave the first women across the UK the right to vote. Many of us take our right to vote for granted and it’s somewhat hard to believe that women were not allowed to vote just over 100 years ago. The Representation of the People Act (1918) paved the way for what would prove to be a long campaign for true gender equality. It’s important to remember however that this Act did not allow all women across the UK to vote. Given the restrictions which were attached to the Act, over 22 per cent of women over the age of 30 were still not afforded this right at this stage. Today, positive steps are being

The group won a total of 8,802 votes from the public during the ballot period. After having a tour of the centre, Chris Elmore MP said: “I’m delighted that the team at Hope Rescue have been successful in their quest for funding. They really do provide a

Give the Lagoon the Green Light, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the Business Secretary to give the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon the go-ahead. Speaking during BEIS Questions, Mr Elmore asked Greg Clark MP when the UK Government intended to respond to the First Minister of Wales’ offer of generous financial support to get the project off the ground. Mr Elmore commented: “The Welsh Government is ready, Swansea Council is ready, the investors are ready: when will the UK Government be ready?! This project would bring benefits for the whole of South Wales - far beyond Swansea Bay - and it’s just the kind of infrastructure investment which we need to grow our economy.” First Minister, Carwyn Jones, offered the UK Governmen

My District Diary Column - February 2018

My District Diary Column - Chris Elmore MP February 2018 Since first being elected, I’ve been really struck by the important role our community groups, clubs and local charities play in helping to bring people together. I’ve also become all too aware of the struggles many groups like this face financially. Last year, Huw Irranca-Davies AM and I held Ogmore’s first Funding Advice Day in Pencoed which brought together many different funding providers such as the Big Lottery Fund, Charity Bank and our two local authorities to help community groups, charities and clubs access new opportunities to allow them to expand, or indeed, to start-up something new. This year we’re holding a second Funding

Speaking after the event, Chris Elmore MP said: “It’s been fantastic to host Cardiff Airport this morning. Last year, the airport had a 9 per cent rise in passenger numbers across over 50 direct routes which is promising to see. This just shows what a good decision it was of the Welsh Government to bring the airport into public ownership in 2013.” Following a difficult few years for the airport, the management now forecast that t
