Ogmore MP Supports “End Our Pain” Campaign

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has joined “End Our Pain” campaigners in writing to the UK Government’s Health Secretary, calling on him to ensure patients who would benefit from medicinal cannabis are able to access it. At a meeting in Parliament, Chris discussed the ongoing campaign with fellow MPs and spoke with individuals who have first-hand experience of the benefits of medicinal cannabis. Last year, Sajid Javid announced some medicinal cannabis products would be made available for clinicians to prescribe where there is a clear medical need from November 1st 2018. Since then, many campaigners have experienced difficulty in obtaining such treatments and have called on the UK Government to

Department for Transport Must Step Up And Help Us Close Pencoed Level Crossing

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has called on Transport Ministers to engage with local politicians to secure the closure of “one of the most dangerous” level crossings in Wales. Speaking at Transport Questions, Chris asked Rail Minister, Andrew Jones MP, to work with officials from Labour-led Bridgend County Borough Council and the Welsh Labour Government to deliver the safety upgrade. Local campaigners have been calling for this work to be undertaken for a number of years and Chris has been working closely with Ogmore AM Huw Irranca-Davies, Pencoed Town Council, Bridgend Council and the Welsh Government to finally make it happen. The Minister refused to be drawn on what action his department would t

“Theresa May Must Not Bully MPs”, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the Prime Minister to stop bullying MPs into backing her deal, following a much-criticised and highly divisive intervention by Theresa May. Speaking during an Urgent Question on the extension to Article 50 last Friday, the Ogmore MP told Brexit Minister Kwasi Kwarteng MP that opposition MPs wouldn’t be “bullied” into supporting the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement. His scathing question followed Theresa May’s speech last Wednesday evening where she accused MPs of frustrating the Brexit process. MPs from across the political spectrum – including the government’s Chief Whip – criticised the Prime Minister for whipping up anger against MPs at an a

Over 100 local residents attended the third annual Funding Advice Day in Maesteg on Friday, organised by Chris Elmore MP and Huw Irranca-Davies AM. With a record 19 different funding providers on hand to give advice and support, many clubs and community groups from across Bridgend County Borough and Rhondda Cynon Taf were able to have one-to-one conversations about their future funding needs. This year’s advice day took place at Maesteg Celtic Rugby Club. Since the events inception in 2016, the local duo have helped hundreds of local organisations to access funding opportunities they may not have otherwise been aware of. With organisations including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Charity Bank, r

Ogmore MP Warns Of Local Spike In Scams

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to address the issue of scams as a matter of priority after he was made aware of several fraudulent operations across South Wales. A large number of local residents have contacted Chris after having received telephone calls and text messages from people pretending to be well-known companies such as BT. These messages asked the recipients to hand over personal information such as bank details and home addresses. Startlingly, a constituent also contacted Chris after receiving an apparently fraudulent email baring the MP’s own name. He has since informed the Parliamentary authorities who are investigating the malicious email. Chris ra

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has added his support to the disability charity, Scope’s latest Disability Price Tag report, which sets out what action needs to be taken to deliver true equality for disabled people living in the UK. Chris met with the charity in Parliament, where he discussed their latest research with them and pledged to support their work moving forwards. On average, disabled adults face extra costs of £583 simply to allow them to go about their daily lives. Scope’s latest report calls on the Department for Work and Pensions to ensure people in receipt of disability benefits do not lose out during the managed migration of Universal Credit. The charity is also asking the UK Governme

Chris Elmore Stands Up For Northern Irish Communities As Suspension Continues At Stormont

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has raised concerns about the support given to communities living in Northern Ireland following the UK Government’s decision to raise domestic rates as the suspension of the nation’s devolved administration continues. The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Karen Bradley MP, announced to the House of Commons on Wednesday that the UK Government will be increasing domestic rates – similar to council tax – by 3 per cent, plus inflation, moving forwards. The Northern Irish Assembly has bee suspended since January 2017 and talks remain ongoing to restore the power sharing arrangements to the devolved legislature. Chris Elmore MP said: “It’s vital that MPs from ac

“Put Down Your Phone and Share a Story!”, says Ogmore MP

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has added his support to World Book Day’s latest campaign: Share a Story. The local MP met with World Book Day representatives at an event in Parliament this week and discussed ways through which he could help to encourage more young people to read more regularly. The Share a Story campaign calls on everyone – and particularly children – to read for at least ten minutes per day. Amidst the growing use of social media, this latest literary drive is also geared towards helping people rediscover literature who may have otherwise stopped reading recently. Chris Elmore MP said: “Spending just ten minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can have a real impa

Ogmore MP Supports Marie Curie’s Daffodil Campaign

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has added his support to Marie Curie’s annual daffodil campaign and called on local residents to follow suit. Every five minutes, someone in the UK dies without getting the care and support they need at the end of their life. Marie Curie provides much-needed expert care to people with terminal illnesses, as well as supporting their families. By donating and wearing your daffodil, members of the public contribute towards enabling the charity to care for more people with a terminal illness and, importantly, provide vital support to their families. Currently, a typical farmer living in Ivory Coast lives on around 74p per day. Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty. Chris Elmore MP commented: “It’s really vital that we do all we can to think about where ou

Ogmore MP Criticises Tory “Great Train Robbery” In St. David’s Day Debate

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called for greater funding from the UK Government in rail infrastructure after nearly a decade of neglect. Chris described the “great train robbery” he believed Wales has lived through since the Conservatives took power in 2010. During a backbench business debate on St. David’s Day, Chris praised the Welsh Labour Government’s record investment in the new Wales and Borders franchise, which will see £5 billion being injected into the network and all trains replaced by 2023. Half of these trains will be built in Wales. In contrast, the Ogmore MP noted the distain with which the UK Government – and notably the Wales Office – appeared to have for improving the sec

“Tory Austerity Is Hitting Women Hardest”, says Ogmore MP

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has voiced his concerns about the disproportionate impact cuts to public spending by the UK Government have had on women working in local government in Wales. UNISON Wales found in November last year that 28,100 jobs in local government had been lost since 2010 as a result of austerity policies enacted by ministers in Westminster. A staggering 18,400 of these jobs were held by women. Chris asked the Leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom MP, for a debate on the adverse impact austerity has had on women during Business Questions this week. Speaker after the session, Chris Elmore MP commented: “Ministers constantly harp on about being strong on equality because
