Ogmore MP’s Great Get Together Shows We Have More In Common

Local communities and people of all ages have come together for Ogmore’s first Great Get Together event in Llanharan, which Chris Elmore MP and his team were pleased to organise with the local community. The Great Get Together is an annual initiative in memory of the former MP for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox, who was murdered by a far right terrorist shortly before the EU referendum. The Great Get Together seeks to challenge the hate and extreme ideology which led to Jo’s death and act on the now infamous message she put forward in her maiden speech in Parliament: that we have far more in common than that which divides us. Over tea and cakes, people from across Llanharan and the surrounding comm

“Let’s Turn The Tide On Plastic Pollution”, says Ogmore MP

Ogmore’s MP, Chris Elmore, has thrown his support behind the campaign to end the global plastic pollution crisis which is causing significant issues for biodiversity. Every single day around 8 million pieces of plastic pollution enter our oceans. In addition, there are now around 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean. Last week in Parliament, Chris signed Greenpeace’s pledge to ensure the forthcoming Environment Bill sets targets to radically reduce plastic pollution. This call comes after Greenpeace recently found plastic waste in every UK river tested. Alongside this, Chris was pleased to take part in National Refill Day, a new initiative seeking to encoura

During the launch, Chris spoke movingly of how honoured he felt to be following in Vernon’s footsteps as Ogmore’s current MP. The seat has continuously been held by Labour since it was first created, which Chris underlined as a testament to Hartshorn’s strong legacy. Hartshorn served as President of the South Wales Miners’ Federation and as a member of the National Executive of the Miners’ F

“Carers Are The Glue That Keeps Our Communities Together”, says Ogmore MP

Ogmore’s MP, Chris Elmore, has shown his support for Carer’s Week, calling them the “glue” that keeps communities together. There are 6.5 million people across the UK who act as carers on a paid or unpaid basis. Caring can be a hugely rewarding experience but carers often find it challenging to take care of their own wellbeing whilst caring. Its impact on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work should not be underestimated. Caring without the right information and support can be tough. Research from Carers Week shows that a staggering 61 per cent of carers across the UK have suffered physical ill health as a result of caring. Chris Elmore MP said: “The army of

Ogmore MP Supports Move To Support Parents Of Premature Babies

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has supported a cross-party move in Parliament to extend maternity and paternity leave for parents of sick or premature babies. Chris became a signatory to a new Ten Minute Rule Bill which seeks to lengthen parental leave in the event of a baby being born prematurely or with a severe illness. Scottish MP David Linden drafted the Bill with colleagues after his new-born daughter was left fighting for her life in a neonatal unit last year. Under current UK law, partners get a maximum of 2 weeks parental leave and must use it within the first 56 days after their child is born. Several countries, such as Sweden, have different rules where parental leave only begins wh

Elmore Calls On UK Government To Provide “Fiscal Stimulus Package” Following Ford Closure Announceme

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has called on the Welsh Secretary to provide a “fiscal stimulus package” should it be needed to protect skilled jobs at the site of the Ford engine plant in Bridgend. The intervention follows Ford’s announcement last week of its plans to close down its South Wales engine production by September 2020. Speaking during a statement on the issue by the Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns MP, the Ogmore MP called on ministers to make a “fiscal intervention” if it meant retaining some of the highly-skilled Ford jobs, or if it was required to encourage other investment at the site. During his question, Chris also made clear that the company still had “questions to answer

“Stop Outsourcing Welfare To The BBC”, Elmore Tells Tories

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has slammed plans to charge pensioners for TV licenses, as announced by the BBC today. At the 2017 General Election, the Conservative Party stood on a manifesto pledging to protect free TV licenses for over 75s but since then have handed the power to do so over to the BBC directly. As a result of the move, only over 75s in receipt of Pension Credit will remain eligible to have the fee waived. Commenting on the decision, Chris Elmore MP said: “It’s time the Tories stopped outsourcing welfare to the BBC and delivered on the pledge they made to pensioners at the last election. “This will hit pensioners hard who are struggling with the burden of continued Tory austerity. “

“Government Must Finally Listen To 1950s Women”, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has reaffirmed his support for 1950s-born women who have been affected by changes to the state pension age while meeting campaigners in London last week. Campaigners seeking to tackle the injustice converged in London this week as the issue was taken to the High Court. The Ogmore MP took the opportunity to catch up with some of the women affected from his constituency and from across the UK. Chris Elmore MP said: “The 1950s women have had their pensions robbed by this cruel Tory Government and the lack of a response from ministers to date is a national disgrace. “Around 4,000 women have been affected by these changes across my constituency and far too many of the

Plague Of "Hidden Fraudsters" Must Be Exposed: MP’s Mission To Tackle Scams

Chris Elmore MP has called for the scourge of “hidden fraudsters” to be exposed, in a bid to put pressure on the government to tackle the “scams epidemic” sweeping across the UK. During a debate in Westminster Hall, the Ogmore MP called on ministers to make tackling online and telephone fraud a strategic policing priority. He hopes that this will deter “other fraudsters from cashing in” on communities. ONS figures from the year ending December 2018 estimate that the number of fraud incidents increased 12 per cent on the period year and now stands at 3.6 million. The Labour MP has recently been contacted by numerous constituents who have been targeted by increasingly sophisticated scams, with

Chris Elmore Hails “Alice In Wonderland” A Great Success

Ogmore’s MP, Chris Elmore, has praised Curtain Up Youth Theatre’s production of Alice and Wonderland at Maesteg Town Hall. The local theatre group performed twice on Saturday to packed out crowds, at what has become a diary highlight for the Ogmore MP. Chris Elmore MP said: “My first engagement when I was elected back in 2016 was a Curtain Up production and every year since they really do go from strength to strength. “This year’s performance was nothing short of a spectacle. It’s clear that the talent onstage and off really is world-class and illustrates just why Maesteg is the cultural capital of south Wales. “A huge congratulations to all of the performers, volunteers and Ruth and Sarah w

“Grim Reality” Of Brexit Is There For All To See, Says Ogmore MP

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has criticised comments made by the US Ambassador to the UK, stating that they illustrate the “grim reality” of Brexit. Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme on Sunday, Woody Johnson, who is a close friend of President Trump, confirmed that the “entire economy” would be on the table within US-UK trade talks post-Brexit. This includes the NHS – a move which many believe would lead to privatisation of the health service by US corporations. Chris Elmore MP said: “This isn’t scaremongering, or project fear or whatever you want to call it. The Brexit reality that now faces us is bleak. “Deal or no deal, if we leave the European Union, the next Prime Minister is goin

Ogmore MP Backs Move To Hold Major Climate Change Conference In The UK

Chris Elmore, Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, has backed calls to hold the next international climate change conference in the UK. Joining over 100 cross-party colleagues, Chris signed a joint letter to the Prime Minister in support of a bid to hold the next meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), COP26, which is due to take place next year. The move follows Labour’s declaration of a climate emergency last month which was supported by the UK Parliament – the first country in the world to do so. Chris Elmore MP said: “Its not simply enough to declare a climate emergency and do nothing. That’s what’s got us into this mess in the first place. “Warm words on cli

Further Statement On The Closure of Ford, Bridgend

"News that Ford plans to close its Bridgend plant in 2020 is devastating for the loyal workforce at the factory, for the community of Bridgend County Borough, the wider South Wales area, and for those in the wider supply chain. This will undoubtedly be a very worrying time for everyone. "Welsh Government Minister for Economy Ken Skates spoke with Ford management earlier today and yesterday also spoke with Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark. "The Minister also spent some time at the plant this morning alongside ourselves, chatting to members of the workforce and listening to their concerns. "The Welsh Government has supported the workers at Bridgend

Joint Statement On The Closure Of Ford, Bridgend

"This is devastating news for all of the workers at the plant, their families and the wider community. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time. This is nothing short of a hammer blow for the South Wales economy. "Alongside the workers and trade unions, and with support of Welsh Government, we have consistently pressed Ford to bring new investment to Bridgend. We are seeking urgent discussions with Ford to press the case again, despite this announcement. "Along with our Bridgend colleagues Carwyn Jones AM and Madeleine Moon MP, and local council leader Huw David, we will also be speaking urgently to the Welsh Government to explore any other employment and opportunities for i
