“Protect Your Pooch This Bonfire Night”, says Ogmore MP

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore is seeking to raise awareness of the difficulties many pet owners face around Bonfire Night. As the nights draw in and families head out to bonfire and fireworks displays, Chris is directing local residents to advice issued by the Dog’s Trust charity that seeks to make life easier for dogs and their owners. While fireworks displays often make for an exciting evening out, it can be an incredibly challenging time for pet owners. Dogs in particular commonly find loud bangs distressing, even if they are distant. The Dog’s Trust has lots of useful information on their website for dog owners and guidance as to what people can do to help if they are planning their own firewor

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has called on the UK Government to clarify and implement recommendations made by the Electoral Commission on overseas funding in UK election campaigns. During Cabinet Office Questions last Wednesday, Chris asked ministers to clarify when discussions with the Electoral Commission would end and when their recommendations around strengthening campaign spending rules would be implemented. Chris Elmore MP said: “There have been many stories in the press from numerous countries around the world about undue influence within domestic election processes from foreign actors. “Parliament Must Practice What We Preach On Climate Change” – Ogmore MP

Almost half of all MPs have now signed up to support Divest Parliament’s pledge which calls on the Trustees of the MPs’ Pension Fund to produce a fossil free investment policy by November. MPs want to see their pension funds invested elsewhere and phase out its substantial investment in fossil fuel companies such as Shell and BP. The fund currently holds £11.6 million of shares in BP Plc and £10.9 million in Royal Dutch Shell. Earlier this year, the UK Parliament became the first country in the world to declare an environment

Ogmore MP Tackles Prime Minister on Spike in Scams Targeting the Elderly

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has called on the government to make tackling scams a strategic policing priority, following a spike in economic crime related to free TV licenses. During Prime Minister’s Questions today, Chris called on Boris Johnson to ensure there was sufficient funding for police forces to allow them to fully investigate and prosecute the growing number of fraudsters targeting elderly and vulnerable people across the UK. Age UK recently issued a warning that scammers were targeting innocent TV licence fee payers ahead of plans to scrap free licenses for the over 75s. The charity has assessed that there could be a 13 per cent increase in fraud arising from the decision to scrap gov

Local MP Leads Campaigners Calling For Better Access To Cash

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore is leading calls for action on the rapidly depleting banking services many rural and suburban communities now find themselves with. During Business Questions, he called on Commons Leader, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, to ask Treasury Ministers to address the issues surrounding access to cash as the problem continues to hit his constituents and many others across the UK. This intervention follows the joint letter he coordinated last week, where 124 cross-party MPs called on the Chief Executive of Barclays to help end the “cash crisis” many people were facing as a result of the bank ending its free cash withdrawal services from Post Offices. Barclays’ decision comes at a time of g

Chris Elmore MP has reaffirmed his commitment to continue working for justice for 1950s-born women affected by the government’s state pension changes at a drop-in event with members of the WASPI campaign in Parliament. The Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition Government accelerated changes to the women’s state pension age in 2011 – a change which many of the women affected claim they were not informed about. As a result, many of them have been unable to plan their finances properly and have had to change their retirement plans. Following the conclusion of the recent High Court case on the issue, MPs have been organising their next steps to seek to correct this injustice. The All-Party Par

Queen’s Speech Was “Taxpayer Funded Propaganda”, says Ogmore MP

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has slammed last week’s Queen’s Speech as a piece of “taxpayer funded propaganda” and indicated that Boris Johnson cannot be trusted to keep his promises. The contentious Queen’s Speech took place last Monday, and sought to set out the UK Government’s future legislative agenda, despite having no Parliamentary majority. Chris made a speech to Parliament on Wednesday (16th October) where he likened the Queen’s Speech to a pseudo election manifesto launch. During his speech, the Ogmore MP said that nothing set out in the government’s so-called “domestic agenda” would help the 1950s women affected by the government’s state pension changes, those suffering on Universal Cred

Elmore Joins March To Save Our Steel Industry

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore joined steelworkers, Welsh Labour MPs, AMs, MEPs, and trade unionists in Newport on Saturday in an attempt to save the Orb steelworks from closure. The firm have said it would cost £50 million to upgrade the site in order to make it more competitive. Many of the plant’s workers marched alongside their families on Saturday, highlighting the much wider impact the job losses pose to both local communities and the wider supply chain. Chris Elmore MP said: “It is clear that the UK Government’s industrial strategy is not working. It’s high

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to confirm additional funding for Wales following last week’s announced new NHS hospitals in England. Under the Barnett Formula, Wales is set to receive a consequential level of funding following the 6 new hospitals which have been announced for England. As yet, no details as to when this investment may be available have been released. The Barnett formula is used by the Treasury to automatically update the funds allocated to each of the devolved regions as spending from Westminster changes. A generation ago, 70% of children walked to school. Now, it’s less than half. The Living Streets charity is looking to reverse this trend with their Walk to School campaign this October for primary and secondary school children. Walking to school has many clear benefits from improved attentiveness in the classroom through to less traffic and pollution on our roads. During morning peak traffic times, 1 in 5 cars on the road are taking children to school and 2 in 5 parents of primary school children are worried about pollution levels around their children’s schools. Chris Ogmore MP said: “There are so many reasons to take part in Walk to School – from improving our children’s physical and ment
