MP Warns of Scam HMRC Calls

August 10, 2016

Ogmore Member of Parliament Chris Elmore has issued a warning to residents from a scamming phone call claiming to be from the HMRC. The call, which is an automated voice, is claiming to be taking residents to court over unpaid tax and asks residents to press 1 in order to speak to a caseworker. Once done, the con artist will then try to gain personal information such as national insurance numbers and bank details.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“The HMRC will never contact residents by phone unless they’re returning a call. At no point should people be giving out personal information. If you’re unsure request information in writing or get in touch with my office. I’ve received a number of messages saying that they’ve been contacted in this way and I’ll be speaking to the police and action fraud about the situation.”

The number from where the phone calls are coming from, 01443 031 265, is a Sheffield based number. It comes as the number of reported cases increases. With consumer watchdogs telling people to be vigilant.

Consumer watchdog Money Saving Expert’s advice is: “be on your guard and ensure you take steps to stop scammers in their tracks. If you’ve received a call from someone claiming to be from HMRC encouraging you to provide bank account or personal details for alleged tax debt, in exchange for ‘tax advice’ or a refund, you should hang up and contact HMRC directly while also reporting the incident to Action Fraud.”
