3 out of 4 Blind People Refused by Taxis

Chris Elmore joined Guide Dogs UK to highlight the shocking statistic that three out of four blind people have been refused service from taxis.

Although illegal under the Equality Act 2010, 3 in 4 assistance dog owners have been refused entry to taxis and businesses during the last year, with taxi and minicabs reported as the worst offenders.

Chris Elmore MP said: “it is an absolute disgrace that discrimination like this still takes place. Education about disability is getting better but this is clear evidence there’s much more still to do.”

The emotional impact of facing discrimination takes a significant toll on disabled people, leading to a loss of independence and confidence and making it more difficult to secure employment and undertake everyday activities. To stop this from happening, drivers need a full understanding of the rights of disabled people and appropriate training.
