Chris Elmore MP Praises Welsh Government's Plan to Give Young People a Voice

July 31, 2017

The Member of Parliament for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has welcomed the Welsh Government’s proposals to extend the right to vote at local elections to 16 year olds.

The Ogmore MP commented: “whilst the UK Government continues to ignore young people at every turn, I’m delighted to see the Welsh Government proposing to give 16 year olds a bigger stake in our democracy”.

Mark Drakeford AM, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government, recently announced the move alongside proposals to: introduce electronic voting, permit voting at places other than traditional polling stations, and holding polling days on different days of the week.

Chris Elmore MP added: “the Welsh Government’s proposals will help to digitise our democracy and I’m thrilled to see Wales leading the way in making our political system more progressive and open”.

The proposals are currently out to consultation for a 12-week period and Mr Elmore would like to encourage as many people as possible to add their suggestions as part of this process.

The Welsh Government’s consultation on electoral reform is open until 10th October 2017 and can be accessed via: https://consultations.gov.wales/consultations/electoral-reform-local-government-wales.
