"Beware of Unknown Quarry Dangers", warns Ogmore MP

August 14, 2017

MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has warned constituents not to swim in nearby quarries or other open water stores over the summer months.

Mr Elmore said: “Every year, around 400 people die across the UK after swimming in our operational and disused quarries – I want to ensure people are aware of the very real dangers involved”.

The Ogmore MP is supporting the Stay Safe Stay out of Quarries campaign which is seeking to raise awareness of the, often hidden, dangers of jumping into and swimming in quarries and similar inland bodies of water.

Some of the unknown dangers of such activities include: cold shock due to the often freezing nature of the water, hypothermia, submerged or abandoned machinery poorly visible from the surface, chemical or biological pollutants, underwater ledges which can trap limbs, and poisonous algae blooms.

Chris Elmore MP continued: “With such beautiful coastline just a short bus ride away, there are plenty of opportunities to swim in wonderful surroundings, whilst minimising the risks involved”.

The campaign is being led by the Mineral Products Association. More information about the campaign can be found by visiting their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/StaySafeStayOutOfQuarries.
