Chris Elmore MP Becomes Chair of Cross-Party Group Fighting for Welsh Rail Investment

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has been elected by a group of cross-party MPs to chair the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rail in Wales.

The MP, who recently coordinated a joint letter from South Wales Welsh Labour MPs to the Transport Secretary and Welsh Secretary calling for increased investment in Welsh rail infrastructure, now wishes to continue campaigning for a u-turn on the Government’s decision to scrap rail electrification west of Swansea.

Mr Elmore commented: “I’m delighted to have been elected by my fellow parliamentarians to chair the group – under my chairmanship, we will continue fighting for a better deal in terms of Welsh rail.”

This move come as at an important time for Welsh rail infrastructure. The current Wales and Borders franchise is due to come to an end in October 2018. Bids for the next franchise period are currently being considered by the Welsh Government.

The Ogmore MP continued: “It’s scandalous that, since 2011, Wales has received a meagre 1.5 per cent of UK Government funding for rail upgrades, despite having 11 per cent of the total track for England and Wales. This Tory Government must stop letting the people of Wales down on infrastructure spending.”

Former Conservative Welsh Secretary, Stephen Crabb MP, recently described the adoption of bimodal trains in place of full track electrification as a “second best” option for South Wales.
