Ogmore MP Backs Welsh Farming as Sector Faces Uncertainty

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has recognised the role that local farmers across the Ogmore constituency have contributed to the economy, the countryside and food production as he pledged to back Welsh farming at an event in Westminster last week.

The event in Parliament was held by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and NFU Cymru as a rallying call to MPs to support farming during a particularly uncertain period for the British agricultural industry as the Brexit negotiations begin.

Mr Elmore commented: “I’m proud to support Welsh farming and the agricultural industry across the UK. Farming provides good quality food, employment and protects our Welsh countryside.”

Farming in Mr Elmore’s Ogmore constituency contributes £4 million to the UK’s economy and provides 560 jobs.

The local MP continued: “the Brexit negotiations pose a significant period of uncerta

inty for farmers, what with so much agricultural legislation being tied up with the European Union. I will campaigning for the best deal for Ogmore farmers and the wider Welsh agricultural sector.”

Welsh farming acts as the cornerstone of the £6.1 billion Welsh food and drink industry and underpins approximately 58,000 jobs. You can learn more about the #BackWelshFarming campaign here: https://www.nfu-cymru.org.uk/back-welsh-farming/back-welsh-farming/.
