Standing Room Only at Pension Justice Event

November 27, 2017

In excess of 100 local women came together in Sarn to discuss the campaign against State Pension inequality for women born in the 1950s last week.

The event, organised by Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, brought together women from across the constituency who had been impacted by the issue and heard from guest speaker, Carolyn Harris MP. Attendees were updated on the campaign and encouraged to get involved at both a local and national level.

Mr Elmore commented: “I’ve tried to contact all women affected by the changes brought in by the Tory-Lib Dem government’s changes to the State Pension age for women to ensure they are well informed. It’s great to see so many local women standing up to ensure there is a strong Ogmore voice in this vital campaign.”

Many women born in the 1950s had their State Pension age raised due to changes made by the UK government in 2011. Many of the women affected were not notified by the Department for Work and Pensions that this rise would apply to them.

The local MP continued: “I’d like to thank everyone who attended and who is helping to build momentum behind this campaign. It was a great opportunity for me to report back as to how this campaign is going in Parliament and to hear the views of women who have been affected on the ground.”

Since first being elected in 2016, Mr Elmore has been contacted by hundreds of women across the constituency about this issue. According to data available from the electoral register, almost 10 per cent of Mr Elmore’s constituents could be impacted by these changes.

Anybody who would like to receive further information about the campaign should contact Mr Elmore’s office by calling 01656 860 034 or email chris.elmore.mp@parliament.uk.
