Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has swapped chocolate for helping those who are in need throughout December.
Mr Elmore will be sharing his “Alternative Advent Calendar” with local residents via his social media feeds over the festive period and encouraging them to take part too.
The local MP will be highlighting a different food item, and indeed non-food products, which local food banks are in need of over Christmas.
Mr Elmore commented: “It’s so important that everyone is able to have a merry Christmas. With the use of food banks soaring across the UK, it’s vital that nobody goes without across our communities. It’s particularly important as December is always a very expensive month – particularly for families with children.”
The first week of this campaign will see the local politician highlight essential food items, before moving on to promote the essential non-food items which people may not always consider donating to a food bank.
Mr Elmore continued: “The main message I want to get across through my Alternative Advent Calendar is that many people are in need of other items – with women’s sanitary products being a key item at the moment. Taking the pressure off people’s purses and wallets at this expensive time of year will help them to ensure they are able to have a stress-free Christmas. My sincere thanks to all the selfless volunteers who staff our local food banks and to the Trussell Trust who provide a lifeline for many.”
