Scrapping Of Electrification Must Not Prevent Safety Improvements, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to fund vital safety improvements to Welsh rail lines.

Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling MP, u-turned on the government’s commitment to fully electrify the Great Western mainline between Cardiff and Swansea in July this year.

Mr Elmore commented: “Part of the proposals for full rail electrification included vital safety upgrades such as the closure of dangerous level crossings like the one in Pencoed. It is unacceptable that these essential modifications might no longer happen.”

The Ogmore MP spoke out during the Transport Secretary’s statement to the House of Commons regarding future rail proposals.

Mr Elmore continued: “Time and time again this Tory government is letting us down on rail. I am astonished that safety upgrades which myself and colleagues have been calling for for years may now not happen. It’s time the Transport Secretary started investing in Welsh infrastructure and stopped letting communities up and down Wales down.”
