My District Dairy Column | December 2017

December 11, 2017

District Diary Column - December 2017

I’d first of all like to wish all residents across the constituency a very merry Christmas and I hope you have a wonderful festive break with family and friends.

November was certainly a busy month both in Parliament and across the constituency. It was fantastic that so many local schools chose to mark UK Parliament Week this year by holding events to raise awareness about the functions of Parliament and how school pupils can get more involved in our democracy. As part of the week, I enjoyed visiting Pencoed Primary School to talk to pupils about my role as their local MP – they certainly gave me quite a grilling! It’s vitally important that young people learn as much as they can about how they can become active citizens and hold a real stake in the future of how the country is run. I do hope some of the pupils I met will consider serving their communities perhaps as a councillor, AM or MP in the future.

I was delighted to support Llanharan’s annual Christmas fayre. I’d like to thank all of the volunteers who consistently make this a wonderful community event every year. There was lots of festive fun for all the family – particularly the annual trip to visit Santa! Huw Irranca-Davies AM and I sat with baited breath as we waited to find out whether we were on the ‘naughty’ or ‘nice’ list! I won’t tell you what he said!

Aside from the start of the Christmas festivities, I was delighted that so many local residents were able to come along to my 1950s women’s State Pension event in Sarn. The changes to the State Pension age have left many women across Ogmore, and all over the UK, with a great deal of financial uncertainty. I’m glad that so many local women have come together and decided to add their voices to the campaign against this inequality. My Welsh Labour colleagues and I will continue to apply pressure to the UK Government to address our concerns and rectify the damage they have inflicted on many women’s’ retirement.

At the end of November, I was pleased to welcome a group of constituents to Westminster to have a tour and a Q&A with me in the Houses of Parliament. I hope they enjoyed having the opportunity to have a look around the palace where I work every week to represent you. I’m glad lots of them got to pick up some last minute Christmas shopping whilst they were there! As regular readers of the Diary will know, I hold regular trips to Parliament for constituents which cost only £25 per person. My next trip will be during the School Easter holidays. For further details and to be sent a booking form, please call my office on 01656 860 034.

I hope you all have a peaceful Christmas break and I wish you all a very happy New Year when it comes. As always, if you ever have any issues, please do get in touch by calling my office on 01656 860 034 or by emailing chris.elmore.mp@parliament.uk. You can also come and see me at one of my regular Advice Surgeries. A full list of upcoming surgeries is published on my website: www.chriselmore.co.uk.
