Following Natwest’s announcement of 20 bank closures across Wales, Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has called on the UK Government to act.
Mr Elmore asked the Leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom MP, to instruct a Treasury Minister to make an urgent statement regarding the closures.
Mr Elmore commented: “It cannot be right that my constituents will be left with just one bank branch if the closure of Natwest in Pencoed and Maesteg goes ahead. Technology does change banking requirements, but we do still need a level of face-to-face provision.”
Pencoed, the second largest town in Mr Elmore’s Ogmore constituency, will be left without any bank branches at all by next summer if plans to close Natwest go ahead.
Mr Elmore continued: “I’ve arranged an urgent meeting with Natwest and Huw Irranca-Davies AM to express our deep concern about these proposals locally. With the scale of this announcement nationally, UK Government Treasury Ministers must make a statement as to what action they intend to take to remedy this situation as a matter of urgency.”
