Elmore Slams Biggest Fares Hike in 5 Years

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has branded the highest rail fare rise for 5 years as another “kick in the teeth” for passengers.

The average increase in ticket pricing across the UK is 3.4% from 1st January. Arriva Trains Wales’ fares have risen by 3.3% whilst Great Western Rail’s services will be hiked by 3.1%.

Mr Elmore commented: “This is yet another blow for passengers across the country. We’ve had the planned rail electrification scrapped last summer and now we’re seeing above inflation rate rises to the cost of your journey to work or visit to town. It wouldn’t be so bad if we were getting the vital safety upgrades we need in this area such as the closure of the Pencoed level crossing.”

Mr Elmore currently chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rail in Wales and has actively campaigned against the scrapping of rail electrification West of Cardiff.

The Ogmore MP continued: “Rail prices are rising far faster than wages and have increased by 32% since the Tories took office in 2010. This is simply unsustainable and makes public transport an unattractive option – particularly when you pay through the nose and then can’t always get a seat. It’s time the UK Government invested in our railways to give us an affordable service, fit for the future.”

Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling MP, was this week accused of “shirking” his responsibility following the announced rises by heading to Qatar on a ministerial visit.
