Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has received assurances from Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling MP, in relation to rail safety upgrades previously thought to have been scrapped alongside electrification.
During Transport Questions, Mr Elmore asked Transport Under-Secretary, Nusrat Ghani MP, to meet with him and representatives from Pencoed Town Council to discuss the closure of Pencoed level crossing.
Mr Grayling responded on Ms Ghani’s behalf and stated that decisions regarding rail electrification “do not and will not in any way impede safety and [the UK Government has] a very large amount of money over the next five years” to fund such upgrades.
Mr Elmore commented: “I, and many others including Pencoed Town Council, have campaigned on this important issue since I was first elected and before. It’s vitally important that safety improvements which were part and parcel of the plans for electrification West of Cardiff continue to go ahead following the shocking decision to cancel the project.”
The Welsh Affairs Select Committee recently launched an inquiry into the cancellation of electrification between Cardiff and Swansea after the UK Government’s decision was criticised by all political parties.
Mr Elmore, who also chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rail in Wales, added: “I’m pleased that the Minister has indicated that vital projects such as the closure of Pencoed level crossing will be advanced. Words are cheap though and I truly hope that Chris Grayling’s warm words today are backed up with action in the near future.”
