Sarah Davies, a teacher from Ysgol Bryn Castell in Bridgend has completed the highly respected Teachers Institute Scheme at the UK Parliament.
Since its launch in 2006, “Teachers’ Institute” has trained more than 700 teachers from all parts of the UK, giving them a detailed understanding of how the House of Commons and Lords work.
Those taking part in Teachers’ Institute become UK Parliament Teacher Ambassadors following the training, and go on to teach their students and fellow education professionals about democracy and the Houses of Parliament.
Rt Hon John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, said: “I am proud that this excellent initiative continues to provide such an invaluable service. Better engagement and dialogue with young people is of fundamental importance to our democracy, and I am sure that the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassadors attending Teachers’ Institute will find the experience both useful and enlightening”.
During the final day of her training, Ms Davies met with her local MP, Chris Elmore, to discuss how she intends to use the training when she returns to Ysgol Bryn Castell.
Mr Elmore commented: “I’m so proud that Sarah has been successful in her training. It’s vital that we do more to open up our democracy to more young people and Sarah’s acheievement here will help that. I’d highly reccomend other teachers across the constituency applying for this brilliant scheme!“
If you are a teacher at a local school who would be interested in organising a school trip to the Houses of Parliament, please contact Chris Elmore’s office by calling 01656 860 034.
