Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has blasted the UK Government’s approach to the Brexit negotiations and called on ministers to provide certainty over future immigration rules.
Addressing Immigration Minister, Caroline Noakes MP, about the government’s latest Immigration White Paper, Mr Elmore said: “This isn’t a sketch from ‘Yes, Minister’, this is people’s lives”. He then went on to criticise the government’s lack of planning given that there appears to be insufficient time to pass any of the required legislation through Parliament within the required timescales.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Elmore said: “There are hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of people up and down the UK who are waiting with baited breath to find out what the government’s new immigration rules will be post-Brexit. Theresa May needs to stop flip-flopping and provide certainty as soon as possible so that these people can stop their lives from being put on hold any further.”
Since the debate, Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee has published a report which finds that new immigration rules for both the transition period and for post-Brexit are not feasible because of an “extremely regrettable” lack of preparation and resources.
Commenting on the development, Mr Elmore said: “It goes without saying that this government is in chaos and I take no pleasure in that at all. When the Tories’ chaos is creating uncertainty for my constituents who are worried about whether or not they may have the right to live in Britain post-Brexit, we should all be concerned because this is simply not in the national interest.”
