In response to a National Audit Office report which revealed Prime Minister Theresa May personally took the decision to cancel electrification between Cardiff and Swansea, Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has labelled the PM actions “disgraceful”.
According to the report, the cancellation of the projected was made “on gaining approval from the Prime Minister” after it was decided that it was “no longer affordable”.
The report contradicts previous claims by UK Government Ministers that the cancellation was not due to costs.
Following the revelations, Mr Elmore said:
“Mrs May’s personal role in the decision to cancel the electrification project is disgraceful. This reeks of distain for the people of South Wales. “
“The decision will hit hard for the people across Ogmore – and we know now that the Prime Minister is to blame.”
“The Government have previously claimed that this cancellation was not due to the cost of the project, but it’s clear now that the Prime Minister decided she could not afford to deliver improvements in Wales, whilst simultaneously pushing forward with multi-billion pound projects in London.”
“Now that we know the Prime Minister is choosing not to invest in Wales purely based on the cost, I am concerned that this puts projects such as the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon into doubt.”
