During Foreign Office Questions on Tuesday, Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, called on the UK Government to push Commonwealth allies to help those with eyesight difficulties.
Mr Elmore asked the Foreign Secretary to champion the cause during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London next month.
In response, Boris Johnson MP, Foreign Secretary agreed to raise the issue.
Poor vision is the world’s largest unmet disability, and according to Clearly, more than 900 million people in the Commonwealth are affected.
A third of the world’s population, 2.5 billion people, suffer from poor vision because they do not have access to a pair of glasses.
Afterwards, Mr Elmore commented:
“I am glad that that the Foreign Secretary has agreed to raise this important issue with Commonwealth but we need concrete action too”.
“I will continue to press for better provisions for those with eyesight issues, both in the UK and beyond”.
“Often all it takes is a pair of glasses to make the world of difference, but some can go a lifetime without getting the help they need”.
