MP Welcomes Commitment from Health Secretary to Engage with Social Media Inquiry

May 11, 2018

Chris Elmore MP has welcomed a commitment from the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt MP, to engage with an upcoming inquiry.

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Media and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing, Mr Elmore will soon be launching an inquiry into how the negative impact of social media can best be minimised.

The inquiry will take place in conjunction with the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH), whose recent #StatusOfMind report claimed that social media could be as addictive as cigarettes and alcohol.

Mr Hunt made the commitment in response to a question by Mr Elmore during Health Questions.

Speaking after Health Questions, Mr Elmore said:

“I am encouraged that the Health Secretary has agreed to engage with the upcoming inquiry and I hope that we can take a cross-party approach to tackling the issue.

The impact of social media on young people’s mental health and wellbeing is a growing issue, and we need urgent action to cancel out the negative effect that these platforms can have.”
