APPG Chair Calls for Green Jobs in Former Mining Communities

May 15, 2018

Chris Elmore MP, Chair of the APPG for Coalfield Communities, has today called on the Government to invest in geothermal energy projects in former mining areas.

The call came following a meeting of the APPG, where Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum discussed the need for long-term, sustainable employment.

In Mr Elmore’s constituency, the South Wales coalfield constituency of Ogmore, a project to utilise the former Caereau Colliery to generate geothermal energy is set to begin in 2020.

Following the APPG meeting, Chair and Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, said:

“Across the UK coalfields, vast collieries are abandoned and remain only as a reminder of the jobs they once represented.”

“There is a perfect opportunity to utilise these former collieries to create clean, sustainable jobs, and to supply energy to homes and businesses in our local towns and villages.”

“A number of promising projects are on the horizon, including in Caereau, but far more could be done to push for the transformations of our former mines.”
