Local MP Calls on Government to Protect Steelworkers through a Customs Union

June 5, 2018

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, on Monday called on the UK Government to commit to membership of a customs union in order to protect the UK’s steel industry.

The comments came in the House of Commons chamber during a response to a statement by International Trade Secretary, Liam Fox MP.

Mr Elmore claimed that in light of the USA’s decision to apply tariffs on UK steel, the industry would be further reliant on exports to Europe, and that a customs union would be the best solution to protect such trade.

In response, the International Trade Secretary refused to commit to a customs union.

Afterwards, Mr Elmore commented:

“A customs union is the only way the UK can best protect our steel industry and safeguard thousands of jobs – including those at Port Talbot.”

“Earlier today I asked the Secretary of State to push for such a customs union – he point-blank refused.”

“It’s clear now that that the Government don’t have the national interest at heart.”

“They’re far too concerned with sticking to their rigid dogma, and are putting jobs at risk in order to do so.”
