Ogmore MP Urges Better Support for Women Leaving Prison

June 6, 2018

Local MP, Chris Elmore, has continued his campaign for better support for women leaving prison by raising the issue with the Government in the Commons Chamber.

Mr Elmore, who has previously led a Parliamentary debate on the issue, asked the Government to set out a plan for how they will improve support available.

In response, Justice Secretary, David Gauke MP, promised the publication of a strategy in the ‘near-future’.

There is often little support for women leaving prison, and according to the Prison Reform Trust, six in 10 women do not have homes to go to on release, whilst 45% of women are reconvicted within one year.

Afterwards, Mr Elmore commented:

“Women leaving prison have an astronomically high tendency to end

up homeless, unemployed, and to be reconvicted – this must end.”

“There needs to be better support for women leaving prison, and its high-time the Government got on with it and published their strategy.”
