Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has spoken out about the need to prevent so-called “gay cure” therapies from going underground after the UK Government’s ban on such practices is implemented.
The UK Government announced this week that therapies intended to cure homosexuality will be banned under new proposals forming part of the National LGBT Action Plan.
During an Urgent Question in the House of Commons, Mr Elmore voiced his concerns that such a ban must not lead to individuals being able to continue such practices behind closed doors.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Elmore said: “I’m glad that the government has chosen to ban these vile practices. Ministers must now ensure that this ban is enforced effectively and the perpetrators do not continue to organise such supposed treatments away from the public eye.”
Many groups representing the LGBT community have welcomed the ban but have stressed the need to monitor progress on the measures announced by the government.
Mr Elmore continued: “It’s vital that the UK Government puts international pressure on other countries to ensure they follow the UK’s lead in this area. It is yet another of the burning injustices the LGBT community faces which we must tackle head-on.”
