District Diary Column

August 7, 2018

'My column for The Diary is always an opportunity to reflect on the diverse nature of events and the various comings together of communities across our local area.

We are blessed to have truly excellent shows, performances and even a carnival and music festival in recent weeks to bring together people from across the age range, often organised by volunteers who focus all their energies to ensuring our diaries are full of fun occasions for all to enjoy.

I want to pay tribute to all the volunteers, young and slightly older for their continuing dedication throughout the year, no matter how small their contribution, from hosting to organising or supporting events, I know very many people appreciate it. So it never hurts to say ‘thank you’.

Throughout recent months I’ve been delighted to take part in many of these occasions, including the annual Brynnau PTA carnival – which really does get better year on year. A performance of ‘FAME’ by the superbly talented students of Pencoed Comprehensive school and even got my water proofs on to help clear a section of the river in Llanharan with the dedicated team from Llanharan and Brynna Wimbles.

This year has seen a first in our area, in the shape of a musical festival, ‘LLAN ROCKS’, organised locally, I was thrilled to see Llanharan, Brynna and Bryn Cae residents (and from further afield) coming together to enjoy wall-to-wall sunshine, live music along with things to do for the kids too. I hope that this new idea can grow and grow in the coming years.

Sometimes residents will raise with me that nothing or little happens in our local area, village or town. Or indeed that they feel that more should be done in their local community. Of course we can always provide more events, but on the whole, I believe we are very lucky to have so much going on in our community, be it in our local schools, our church and community halls or in wonderful organisations like the Llanharan OAPs; the Llanharry Club; Llanharan RFC or indeed in local libraries like Pencoed.

There is always the suggestion that a recess from Parliament, is a holiday for MPs, now it is true, I will take a holiday with many family, like many do over the summer months, but I can assure residents that the recess also means a chance to spend more time during the week in the constituency, holding advice surgeries and generally trying to meet with and work for residents on issues, that you can’t often do when Parliament is sitting. Throughout August I am especially looking forward to the Annual Horticultural Show, as fetes and events right across the constituency.

A special good luck to those young people who will be receiving their GCSE and A Level results in August – I remember all too well the nervousness of that time (although admittedly now a long time ago!), my only advice would be remember there is a huge amount of support out their, especially if your results aren’t quite what you expected them to be and that people will always be there to help.

I wish everyone a restful summer, in what I hope will be continued good weather and as ever I’m avaaible for constituents via my constituency office, 01656 860034, Chris.Elmore.MP@Parliament.uk or you can contact me via Facebook at ‘Chris Elmore MP’ or attend one of my four advice surgeries held across the area every month.'
