Parliamentary Delegation to Rwanda

November 16, 2018

During the course of the brief Parliamentary recess last week, I joined the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association for three days on a delegation to Rwanda.

Our focus included the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting which Rwanda will host in 2020; international girls education; their progressive agenda on electing women to Parliament, currently standing at 60% and meeting with the Foreign Minister to discuss bilateral relations between our two nations.

There are few countries in our world, who have faced such bloodshed, while the international community stood by and did not respond to the genocide in 1994.

The delegation included visiting sites of mass killing, memorials marking the genocide and meeting with survivors who bravely gave testimonials of the horrors they faced. A truly harrowing and deeply humbling experience.

As we continue to learn from history, it is important to understand that from great horror, can come progress, tolerance and understanding - Rwanda is a true example of this.
