“I Will Not Make My Constituents Poorer”: Ogmore MP Votes Down Brexit Deal

January 23, 2019

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has joined with hundreds of MPs of all parties to vote down Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

The Prime Minister’s plan for Brexit was resoundingly rejected by the House of Commons last week, with 432 MPs voting against the deal and only 202 opting to support it. The majority of 230 makes this the biggest defeat in the history of the UK Parliament.

Speaking after the vote, Chris Elmore MP said:

“The simple truth is, the deal we were being asked to vote on will make our communities across Ogmore poorer and would have opened a Pandora’s Box of uncertainty for the country.”

It is expected that Theresa May will return to the House of Commons on 29th January with a new proposal for the UK’s departure from the European Union.

A vote of no confidence in the government was immediately tabled by the Labour Party following the historic defeat. Mrs May’s government narrowly secured the support of the Commons with the support of her confidence and supply partners, the Democratic Unionist Party.

Chris Elmore MP added:

“In any normal circumstances, after a defeat this large, the government should have fallen. Sadly, due to another of David Cameron’s disastrous legacies – the Fixed Term Parliaments Act – Theresa May is now able to rumble on as if nothing has changed.”

The Ogmore MP has reaffirmed his commitment to doing all he can to speak up on the issues affecting his constituents, despite the vast amount of Parliamentary time being dominated by Brexit.

Constituents who are in need of advice or support are advised to contact Mr Elmore’s constituency office on 01656 860034 or by emailingchris.elmore.mp@parliament.uk.
