Chris Elmore MP Calls On UK Government To Take Links Between Social Media And Mental Health Seriously

January 23, 2019

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has called on UK Government ministers to consider the recommendations of his forthcoming report into the impact social media has on young people’s mental health.

Chris Elmore chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Media and Young People’s Mental Health which recently concluded an Inquiry into the issue. Oral and written evidence from a range of stakeholders has now been collated and the Inquiry, which is being run alongside the Royal Society for Public Health, will report back via a report due to be published in the spring.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“I’ve been really pleased by the wide-ranging evidence we’ve heard and read throughout this Inquiry. It’s essential that UK Government ministers take our report’s recommendations seriously and take real action on this important issue.”

The Ogmore MP raised the Inquiry in the House of Commons last week with the Leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom MP, and called on her to provide government time for MPs to debate the issues involved.

Chris Elmore MP:

“It’s essential that MPs are given a full and proper opportunity to debate these issues in Parliament so that they can share their experiences of the issues associated with the report and put pressure on the government to take action.”

Andrea Leadsom advised a debate be sought in Westminster Hall to discuss the report.

Chris Elmore intends to continue his efforts to seek government action on these issues in advance of the report’s publication.
