Impact Of Fuel Poverty Is Devastating Communities, says Ogmore MP

February 19, 2019

Chris Elmore MP has called on the UK Government to control the monopoly of the “Big 6” energy companies in a bid to reduce energy poverty.

The Ogmore MP added his support for Fuel Poverty Awareness Day which seeks to highlight the precarious situation many communities are now finding themselves in. Those assessed as being most at risk are elderly and vulnerable populations.

Data from National Energy Action suggests the Welsh NHS could have saved between £17 million and £20 million last winter if more action had been taken to reduce the causes of fuel poverty.

Chris Elmore MP commented:

“It’s a national scandal that there were 50,100 excess winter deaths last year. Far too many families are finding themselves in a situation where they have to choose between putting food on the table or heating their home.

“This situation is simply unacceptable in 2019.”

The Welsh Government’s Warm Homes Programme is seeking to eradicate fuel poverty yet stagnating wages and rising energy costs are causing the problem to persist.

The Ogmore MP added:

“We’ve heard warm words from Theresa May about taking on the Big 6 but her efforts appear to be having little or no affect on the ground. Her actions need to start matching her rhetoric.”
