“Tory Austerity Is Hitting Women Hardest”, says Ogmore MP

March 6, 2019

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has voiced his concerns about the disproportionate impact cuts to public spending by the UK Government have had on women working in local government in Wales.

UNISON Wales found in November last year that 28,100 jobs in local government had been lost since 2010 as a result of austerity policies enacted by ministers in Westminster. A staggering 18,400 of these jobs were held by women.

Chris asked the Leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom MP, for a debate on the adverse impact austerity has had on women during Business Questions this week.

Speaker after the session, Chris Elmore MP commented:

“Ministers constantly harp on about being strong on equality because they have a woman Prime Minister but the reality is we have had nearly a decade of cuts which have hit women across the UK hardest.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the work Unison Wales have done in exposing the stark inequality this has caused – I will do all that I can to continue shining a light on this injustice in Parliament on behalf of constituents.”

Theresa May mooted the end of austerity at the Conservative Party’s autumn conference but this has been refuted by numerous MPs and many people working in the public sector and beyond.
