Chris Elmore Supports Fairtrade Foundation’s #SheDeserves Campaign

Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has met with the Fairtrade Foundation in Parliament to voice his support for their latest campaign: #SheDeserves.

Chris took Fairtrade Fortnight as an opportunity to learn more about the charity’s campaign and is now seeking to raise awareness of the need to do more to support agricultural workers in developing countries.

£1.86 is recognised as the amount of money a cocoa farmer in West Africa needs to earn each day to achieve a living income.

Currently, a typical farmer living in Ivory Coast lives on around 74p per day. Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty.

Chris Elmore MP commented:

“It’s really vital that we do all we can to think about where our food comes from and the impact it can have on people’s lives. I would urge local residents to buy Fairtrade products whenever they can.

“I pay tribute to the sterling work the Fairtrade Foundation do day in, day out to both raise awareness of the issues developing countries are facing and their efforts to change things for the better.”

The #SheDeserves campaign specifically aims to secure a living income for women in the region as they are consistently hit hardest by the damaging trend of low wages.

The Foundation is seeking to work with governments around the world, chocolate companies and retailers to make the necessary commitments and enact policies to allow this to happen as soon as possible.
