Chris Elmore Stands Up For Northern Irish Communities As Suspension Continues At Stormont

March 8, 2019

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has raised concerns about the support given to communities living in Northern Ireland following the UK Government’s decision to raise domestic rates as the suspension of the nation’s devolved administration continues.

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Karen Bradley MP, announced to the House of Commons on Wednesday that the UK Government will be increasing domestic rates – similar to council tax – by 3 per cent, plus inflation, moving forwards.

The Northern Irish Assembly has bee suspended since January 2017 and talks remain ongoing to restore the power sharing arrangements to the devolved legislature.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“It’s vital that MPs from across the UK continue to voice concerns on behalf of people living in Northern Ireland prior to power being restored to the Northern Irish Assembly.

“Given that taxes are set to rise, it is only right that UK ministers look at what support they may need to provide to families who many be struggling and who currently have no MLAs to take action on their behalf.”
