Ogmore MP Warns Of Local Spike In Scams

March 21, 2019

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to address the issue of scams as a matter of priority after he was made aware of several fraudulent operations across South Wales.

A large number of local residents have contacted Chris after having received telephone calls and text messages from people pretending to be well-known companies such as BT. These messages asked the recipients to hand over personal information such as bank details and home addresses.

Startlingly, a constituent also contacted Chris after receiving an apparently fraudulent email baring the MP’s own name. He has since informed the Parliamentary authorities who are investigating the malicious email.

Chris raised this issue at Business Questions on Thursday, and called on ministers to look again at what the government can do to tackle scams, of which elderly and vulnerable individuals are thought to be most at risk of.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“I’ve received some deeply worrying reports of scam activity recently and I would like to stress to local residents that they should not hand over personal information via the phone or in response to an email unless they are 100% sure they know who they are talking to.

“I really hope the UK Government looks meaningfully at what action ministers can take to tackle this activity which is being targeted at countless people.”
