“Theresa May Must Not Bully MPs”, says Ogmore MP

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the Prime Minister to stop bullying MPs into backing her deal, following a much-criticised and highly divisive intervention by Theresa May.

Speaking during an Urgent Question on the extension to Article 50 last Friday, the Ogmore MP told Brexit Minister Kwasi Kwarteng MP that opposition MPs wouldn’t be “bullied” into supporting the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement. His scathing question followed Theresa May’s speech last Wednesday evening where she accused MPs of frustrating the Brexit process.

MPs from across the political spectrum – including the government’s Chief Whip – criticised the Prime Minister for whipping up anger against MPs at an already toxic climate. Several MPs received threatening communications from members of the public after the comments were made.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“It’s time Theresa May realised that it’s her red lines and complete and utter stubbornness which has led us into this position. If she’d reached meaningfully across party lines at the start of this process, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

“The Prime Minister should, for once, take some personal responsibility for the uncertainty and political chaos which has come about on her watch.

“Yet again, we really do have to question Theresa May’s political – and personal – judgement when she’s whipping up anger against MPs simply to try and get a bit of PR. Let’s not forget that it’s MPs who she needs to back her deal and she’s just alienated pretty much all of us!”

Chris also asked the Minister to confirm when the new proposed date would be for the UK’s departure from the European Union following the extension to Article 50. Mr Kwarteng refused to address Chris’ concern with Theresa May’s approach and explained that the new exit date would be conditional on whether the Withdrawal Agreement was accepted by MPs after having been resoundingly rejected twice.
