“We Can’t Just Preach Diversity, We Must Practice It”, says Ogmore MP

April 3, 2019

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the Houses of Parliament to create more employment opportunities for people from across all parts of the UK.

Addressing Tom Brake MP, who represents the House of Commons Commission, Chris called for improvements to the “regional and nation diversity” of people working in Westminster to better represent the country as a whole.

Adding to this, he asked for more to be done to encourage women to take up senior roles within the Parliamentary estate.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“In 2019, it’s essential that, as MPs, we don’t just preach diversity but we actually practice it in everything we do.

“We’ve made great progress in recent decades to improve diversity but it’s vital that we redouble our efforts to make our democracy – and the hardworking staff who facilitate our democratic processes – more representative of the UK population.

“Young people from my constituency should be able to benefit from apprenticeships and other job opportunities at the Houses of Parliament just as much as people from London and the South East do.”

Mr Brake responded positively to Chris’ question by highlighting the work of the Amazing Apprenticeships organisation, which has begun working with the Parliamentary authorities to reach out to schools and colleges across the UK to encourage such changes.
