Ogmore MP Calls For Action On LGBT Rights In Brunei

April 18, 2019

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called for LGBT rights to be placed firmly on the agenda at the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) following the Saltan of Brunei’s decision to pass anti-LGBT laws.

The next CHOGM is taking place in Kigali in Rwanda in 18 months’ time, a country which Chris has also encouraged to change course during a recent delegation to the central African country last November.

During a Westminster Hall debate, Chris asked Foreign Office Ministers to use their influence through the Commonwealth to bring such countries’ sexuality laws into the twenty-first century.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“The news coming out of Brunei in recent weeks has been deeply troubling. But sadly, it’s the tip of the iceberg. It’s time we sent a strong message to countries across the Commonwealth – and around the world – that people should be allowed to live equally, regardless of their sexuality.

“This isn’t about imposing laws on other countries, it’s about sending a strong message that human rights must be protected.

“Nobody should fear violence or even death because of who they fall in love with. End of story.”
