Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has criticised comments made by the US Ambassador to the UK, stating that they illustrate the “grim reality” of Brexit.
Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme on Sunday, Woody Johnson, who is a close friend of President Trump, confirmed that the “entire economy” would be on the table within US-UK trade talks post-Brexit. This includes the NHS – a move which many believe would lead to privatisation of the health service by US corporations.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“This isn’t scaremongering, or project fear or whatever you want to call it. The Brexit reality that now faces us is bleak.
“Deal or no deal, if we leave the European Union, the next Prime Minister is going to be continuing to roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump in the hope of a bumper trade deal.
“The US Ambassador’s confirmation that these trade talks would include our NHS and lowering our food standards through products like chlorinated chicken means that we have to pause and ask ourselves: is this really the future we want?”
Following the European Elections, First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed that Welsh Labour will be campaigning for a confirmatory vote on any Brexit deal, with remain as an option on the ballot paper.
Chris Elmore MP continued:
“We know what Brexit is now. It’s far from the sunlit uplands that were promised by Boris Johnson and the other leaders of this Tory project.
“There is now no question that we must put this issue back to the people and let them have the final say as to how we proceed.”
