Ogmore MP Backs Move To Hold Major Climate Change Conference In The UK

Chris Elmore, Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, has backed calls to hold the next international climate change conference in the UK.

Joining over 100 cross-party colleagues, Chris signed a joint letter to the Prime Minister in support of a bid to hold the next meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), COP26, which is due to take place next year.

The move follows Labour’s declaration of a climate emergency last month which was supported by the UK Parliament – the first country in the world to do so.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“Its not simply enough to declare a climate emergency and do nothing. That’s what’s got us into this mess in the first place.

“Warm words on climate change must be backed up with meaningful changes and hosting COP26 would be a vital marker denoting the UK’s stake in this.

“We have been an international leader on climate change in the past, becoming the first country in the world to legislate the first ever legally-binding carbon budgets.

“The action – or lack of action – we take over the next 10 years will determine whether we retain this vital leadership role and help decide the fate of our planet for generations to come.”

This move by parliamentarians follows thousands of protests which have taken place around the world demanding action on climate change.
