“Let’s Turn The Tide On Plastic Pollution”, says Ogmore MP

June 26, 2019

Ogmore’s MP, Chris Elmore, has thrown his support behind the campaign to end the global plastic pollution crisis which is causing significant issues for biodiversity.

Every single day around 8 million pieces of plastic pollution enter our oceans. In addition, there are now around 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean.

Last week in Parliament, Chris signed Greenpeace’s pledge to ensure the forthcoming Environment Bill sets targets to radically reduce plastic pollution. This call comes after Greenpeace recently found plastic waste in every UK river tested.

Alongside this, Chris was pleased to take part in National Refill Day, a new initiative seeking to encourage people to use fewer single-use plastic bottles.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“It’s a moral necessity that we turn the tide on plastic pollution. It may already be too late to reverse some of the damage done by single-use plastics but we have to prevent this situation from enveloping yet more ecosystems.

“The climate and environment emergency Parliament declared earlier this year is a call to action to not only take action on climate change but to reduce humanity’s impact on biodiversity across the world. Among the most pressing issues is plastic pollution and we cannot ignore what we now know about the impact this is having.

“I’ll be continuing to push the government to do more on this issue but individuals can also make a difference. If we all act now to consciously reduce our personal plastic footprints, we can begin to curb what is becoming a deeply worrying trend.”
