Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on pensioners across his constituency to claim pension credit if they’re entitled to do so.
Speaking at Business Questions, Chris highlighted the significant amount of the welfare benefit that is currently going unclaimed by those who are able to do so. The charity Independent Age has found that £5 million worth of pension credit is currently going unclaimed across Chris’ Ogmore constituency alone.
Chris urged the government to do more to promote the benefit to pensioners who many be struggling, particularly in light of the changes to free TV license fees which were announced last month.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“After the Tories’ appalling broken promise to the over 75s over TV licenses, it’s vital that older generations know what money they’re entitled to claim.
“If you’re eligible, claiming pension credit opens the door to retaining your free TV license even after the new rules come in.
“I’d highly encourage anybody out there who is struggling financially to make use of this important provision. At the moment, the money is sitting unclaimed at the DWP. After ten years of Tory austerity, it’s essential that local residents claim what they’re entitled to.”
Chris is encouraging constituents to visit the charity Age UK’s whistle-stop guide to pension credit eligibility.
