Chris Elmore, Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, has slammed the UK Government’s plans to end free movement of EU citizens without a new system on 1st September as “deeply irresponsible and morally reprehensible”.
The UK Government confirmed on Monday that ministers plan to immediately end EU citizens’ rights to work and reside in the UK the day after the UK is set to leave the EU.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“You can’t just go and end the current immigration rules without having a new set of rules in place. It’s dishonest to suggest otherwise.
“This is a deeply irresponsible decision from Boris Johnson’s government and sends completely the wrong signal about who we are as a country. It’s frankly morally reprehensible that ministers would seek to further deepen the uncertainty facing EU citizens who have made our country their home – many of whom haven’t yet registered for settled status.”
Recent House of Commons Library figures suggest that around 2.3 million EU citizens living in the UK are yet to apply for the Home Office’s settled status scheme.
