“We must end the stigma”, says Ogmore MP on World Alzheimer’s Month

Chris Elmore MP is proud to have added his support to World Alzheimer’s Month this September.

World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign which runs every September that seeks to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease and to challenge the stigma that still surrounds dementia. This September will mark the 8th year this campaign has been running.

2 in 3 people believe that there is either little or no understanding of dementia in their country and although the impact of World Alzheimer’s Month is growing, the lack of information and the common misconceptions around the disease remain a global problem.

Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia affects an estimated 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 and 1 in 6 over the age of 80. You can find more information about living with the disease or living with a loved one with the disease on the Alzheimer’s Disease International website: www.alz.co.uk.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“We all know someone who has been affected by dementia in some way and yet it remains a very difficult subject to talk about.

“The more we talk to each other, the more we learn about the disease, then the easier it will be to support one another. Let’s talk about dementia during World Alzheimer’s Month and develop our understanding in order to better support those living with the disease.

“This month, let’s reach out to learn about the disease, to support those affected by the disease, and let’s fight the stigma by talking to each other about it.”
