“Where the Welsh Labour Government Leads – the UK follows” – Chris Elmore MP

Chris Elmore MP has welcomed the firm commitment made by Wales’ First Minister, Mark Drakeford AM, to give the public a final say referendum on any Brexit deal, with Welsh Labour campaigning to remain.

50,000 jobs are thought to be at risk across Wales under a No Deal Brexit scenario, as through an economic hit which could see the Welsh economy shrink by up to 10 per cent.

The Welsh Labour First Minister delivered his first speech at the Labour Party’s annual conference in Brighton this weekend, where he also made the case for a strengthened United Kingdom.

During his speech, Mr Drakeford pledged his support for the Welsh steel industry, recommitted to delivering the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, as well as confirming that Wales will remain a world leader when it comes to tackling climate change.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“After 3 years of chaos from the Tories, it’s crystal clear that there’s now only one way to break the Brexit deadlock: putting this issue back to the people. I’m really pleased that Mark Drakeford has been so clear about Welsh Labour’s position on this and that his Welsh Labour Government will lead the campaign to remain in the European Union.

“Dogmatic nationalism is poisoning our politics is causing much of our discourse to fracture. This nationalism pits people against each other – people who all contribute to life in the UK and who all deserve to share in its prosperity. A UK Labour Government will work to repair the divisions created by Brexit and bring our country back together.

“Aside from this, it’s clear that where Wales leads, the UK follows. We’ve seen an array of Welsh Labour policies being rolled out UK-wide in recent years and I’m pleased that it’s now UK Labour policy to extend free prescriptions to everyone across our country.”
