“Domestic Abuse Bill a top priority” – Ogmore MP

October 2, 2019

Following the recall of Parliament, the Domestic Abuse Bill will now receive its second Parliamentary reading this week. The landmark piece of legislation is aimed at raising awareness and understanding about the devastating impact of domestic abuse on victims and their families. It also looks to improve the effectiveness of the justice system in providing protection for victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.

According to SafeLives, nearly 2 million people suffer some form of domestic abuse every year, with more than 100,000 at high or imminent risk of being murdered or seriously injured as a result of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse also poses a serious risk to children with 130,000 children living in homes with high-risk domestic abuse and 62% of children living with domestic abuse are themselves harmed by the perpetrator of that abuse in addition to the serious mental anguish caused by witnessing such abuse.

The Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse’s annual conference (www.eida.org.uk/upcoming-events) is taking place in London at the BBC Radio Theatre on 8 October, highlighting how timely and important this issue is.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“I am very pleased that this vitally important Bill has returned to the Parliamentary agenda for this week.

“This Bill has the means to improve lives for hundreds of thousands of people living with this terrible crime and will put in place concrete steps that will support them and alleviate their suffering.

“It is appalling that this highly important second reading was delayed as a result of the unlawful and manipulative prorogation. Victims have already had to wait so long for this proposed legislation to make its way to Parliament, but we must now capitalise on the chance to make a real difference to people’s lives.”
