Ogmore MP Calls On Ministers To Confirm Additional Funding For Wales

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to confirm additional funding for Wales following last week’s announced new NHS hospitals in England. Under the Barnett Formula, Wales is set to receive a consequential level of funding following the 6 new hospitals which have been announced for England. As yet, no details as to when this investment may be available have been released.

The Barnett formula is used by the Treasury to automatically update the funds allocated to each of the devolved regions as spending from Westminster changes. This formula makes up a large percentage of the funding of each of the devolved governments.

Ogmore MP Chris Elmore said:

“Well after the Tories’ bogus “40 new hospitals” announcement for England, we now know that it is in fact just 6. Despite their dishonesty, it’s vital that Wales receives a consequential amount of this funding so that the Welsh Labour Government can continue investing in our public services.

“After nearly a decade of Tory austerity, the people of Wales and my constituents in Ogmore at least deserve to know when they’re going to be receiving this funding boost so that Welsh Government ministers can get on spending it on Welsh priorities.”

The Welsh Labour Government set out its plans for the health service in Wales in 2018 in “A Healthier Wales”. It wants to see more services in the community rather than in hospital, better statistical tools to identify areas for improvement, and better technology to run the system more efficiently.

The Welsh Government have recently released £50 million in funding to shake up the computer services in the NHS which will be used in areas such as digital patient services, data collection, modernisation, and cybersecurity.
