Local MP and AM welcome regeneration kick-start at Maesteg Town Hall

March 3, 2020

Local Ogmore Welsh Labour duo Chris Elmore MP and Huw Irranca-Davies AM have welcomed the start of construction work as part of the ambitious redevelopment of Maesteg Town Hall.

Welsh Labour-led Bridgend County Borough Council is working with the Awen Cultural Trust and a number of other key funders to repair, restore, and extend the Grade II listed building, one of the biggest community investments delivered in Maesteg in recent years.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“I’m really pleased work is commencing to future-proof Maesteg Town Hall for generations to come. Welsh Labour-led Bridgend County Borough Council and the Awen Cultural Trust have spearheaded this important project which will mean the Town Hall remains a key cultural hub for local residents of all ages."

The hall was first established in the late 1800s and is set to re-open in summer 2021, once the renovation works have been completed. The project has been funded by Bridgend County Borough Council, the Welsh Government, Valleys Task Force, the European Regional Development Fund, the Awen Cultural Trust, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Maesteg Town Council, and the Davies Trust.

As well as delivering key refurbishments to the main auditorium, the plans also include a modern library where organisers hope to tackle social isolation and improve digital literacy. Visitors to the hall will also be able to learn more about the history and heritage of the Llynfi Valley.

Huw Irranca-Davies AM said:

“This is great news for Maesteg and the wider Llynfi Valley. Huge credit to Bridgend County Borough Council, all of the other funders, and the local community who have constituently pushed so hard to make this project a reality.

“I can’t wait for it to re-open in 2021 and to see new visitors making use of this key community hub in the years ahead.”
